Venezuela: Japan's Threat Expands Energy Cooperation - July 29, 2009 1236 GMT - Venezuela and Japan accelerated cooperation on energy accords after the Japanese government threatened to cut financing, Bloomberg reported July 29. The Japan Bank for International Cooperation considered backing out of a planned $1.5 billion loan to state oil company Petroleos de Venezuela SA after Venezuela’s government seized Japanese company assets. Venezuela’s National Assembly may now approve the joint ventures between local and Japanese energy companies for oil production in the Junin and Carabobo areas of the Orinoco Belt in southeastern Venezuela by the end of 2009, Oil and Energy Minister Rafael Ramirez said in comments on state television. The exact form of participation of Japanese companies in the natural gas project will be determined by September 10.
Venezuela: Ambassador Withdrawn From Colombia - July 29, 2009 0531 GMT - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said July 28 he has withdrawn Venezuela's ambassador and diplomatic personnel from Colombia and will "freeze relations" between the two countries, Reuters reported.
Colombia: FARC Militants Attack Colombian Soldiers, Civilians - July 28, 2009 1707 GMT - An attack by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) on a boat traveling down a river in Choco department, Colombia, has left five dead, five injured and up to 10 missing, El Tiempo reported July 28, citing reports from several local media sources. FARC militants used assault rifles in the attack, which sunk the boat carrying Colombian soldiers and civilians that were going to eradicate illegal coca crops.
China: Venezuela Is Top Supplier Of Fuel Oil In June - July 28, 2009 1604 GMT - Venezuela was the biggest supplier of fuel oil to China in June, with an increase of 71.8 percent from the amount supplied in May, Platts reported July 28, citing China's Customs.
Russia, Venezuela: Energy, Military Agreements Signed - July 28, 2009 1216 GMT - Russia and Venezuela signed several agreements on July 27 covering energy, military and agricultural cooperation, Bloomberg reported July 28. In one accord, Gazprombank will provide $4 billion in financing for the development of minerals and other raw materials in Venezuela. Both sides also signed an accord to form a joint company to service drilling equipment and compress gas, as well as to cooperate in oil, fisheries and nuclear energy for civilian use.
